For more than five decades, a quiet but powerful partnership has been changing the lives of Belizean children born with severe orthopedic conditions. It offers hope where families often feel helpless, turning dreams of mobility into reality.
The Belize Children’s Project, the flagship program of the Rotary Club of Belmopan, stands as a beacon of life-changing community service. Founded to support children facing profound physical disabilities, the project ensures that medical limitations do not dictate a child’s future.
Over 50 Years of Healing and Hope
Since 1972, this dedicated initiative has helped more than thousand Belizean children gain access to critical, specialized medical treatments, complex surgeries, and intensive rehabilitation services. The project specifically serves children under the age of 18 who are living with conditions affecting:
- Spine and neck (including severe curvature of the spine)
- Shoulders, arms, elbows, and hands
- Hips, legs, knees, and feet (such as clubfoot and bone abnormalities)
By addressing these severe bone-related issues, the project directly improves the mobility and long-term quality of life for these children, while simultaneously fostering a more inclusive and supportive community across Belize.
A Powerful International Partnership
The magic of the Belize Children’s Project lies in a seamless network of international generosity and a flawless handoff between Rotary districts.
Every year, the Rotary Club of Belmopan hosts local clinics where visiting specialized physicians conduct thorough screenings to identify children in need of advanced intervention. Once a child is approved for treatment, the Belmopan club steps in to cover the critical costs of international airline tickets.
The care continues across borders through a vital partnership with Rotary Club of Illinois District 6510 and Shriners Hospital in the United States:
- The US Handoff: As soon as the children arrive in the US, District 6510 takes over to coordinate the logistics on the ground.
- Surgeries & Housing: District 6510 manages the arrangements for the children’s surgeries at Shriners Children’s Hospital and secures warm, welcoming host families in the St. Louis area.
- A Home Away from Home: These host families provide housing, daily transportation, and emotional support, ensuring the children are cared for like family throughout their surgeries and rehabilitation.
Funding the Mission: The Wine & Cheese Gala
Providing world-class medical care completely free of charge to families requires substantial resources. To keep this vital lifeline running, the Rotary Club of Belmopan hosts its signature annual Wine & Cheese Gala.
Every dollar raised during this premier fundraising event is poured directly back into the program. The funds are essential for covering specialized rehabilitation programs and the airline tickets that physically connect Belizean children to the free, expert medical care awaiting them in the United States.
Through over fifty years of collective effort, the Rotary Club of Belmopan, Rotary District 6510, Shriners Hospitals, and a global network of volunteers continue to prove that when a community unites across borders, lives are truly transformed one step, one surgery, and one child at a time.
