Costa Rica continues to inspire people from around the world to serve their communities. Two new Rotary Clubs—the Rotary Club of Guanacaste and the Rotary Club of Atenas—bring together expatriates united by friendship and a desire to give back to the country they now call home.
Rotary Club of Guanacaste
Led by President Maritza Jiménez, this Club was created after members witnessed the lack of support for local communities during an emergency. “That motivated us to act,” said Jiménez.
The club quickly grew to 22 members, thanks to the use of local social networks and strong teamwork, and the club’s priorities are community improvement, health, and education. They are already meeting with local leaders to identify needs.
Looking ahead, they plan to reach every community represented by their members, increase membership, and find a permanent meeting place. “We see our club as a hub where different community groups can come together and achieve more,” said Jiménez.
Rotary Club of Atenas
In the central highlands, the Rotary Club of Atenas, led by Secretary Lynn Snyder, was founded by former Rotarians from New Jersey who missed the camaraderie and impact of Rotary. “Experiencing those friendships and the difference we made, inspired us to recreate that here,” said Snyder.
The club now has 21 members, recruited through personal invitations. Education is their main focus, and they emphasize understanding the real needs of Atenas. They have begun collaborating with local government and community leaders to earn trust and build long-term relationships.
Mentors such as Maria Elvira Chavarria, DG Eugenia Echeverria, Nolan Zamora, and Roberto Castillo have been invaluable, helping with language, protocols, and fundraising.
Together, these two clubs embody Rotary’s vision of service without borders, creating lasting change in Costa Rica and beyond.
